What to look for in a Baby Carrier?
The most comfortable baby carriers are those that hold the baby close to the wearer preferably up high and tucked in close to your body with wide straps that distribute weight evenly across the back and body. Many of the baby carriers available on the high street whilst quick and easy to use can hang down from the shoulders and become uncomfortable giving the wearer back and shoulder ache. It is important therefore to research a little into the types of baby carrier before making your decision - Green Jelly can of course assist in making this choice.
If choosing an upright carrier, those which spread the baby’s legs wide are better for the baby than those which suspend the child from the crotch. This froggy position is better for development of a baby’s pelvis and back. Carriers are also available which can carry babies in a cradle position. In both upright and cradle positions it is important that the head and spine are supported in young babies and that they are not ‘scrunched up’ or with restricted breathing.
Some carriers are better for children as a newborn or small baby and others for older babies who are able to sit and support their own weight. When looking for a carrier it is useful to consider who will use the carrier, when you will carry your baby and whether you would like one sling that takes you from birth to toddler. You can buy baby carriers which suit babies from birth to toddlerhood, but you may wish to purchase two carriers, one for your young baby and a separate carrier specifically suited to an older toddler later on.
It is possible to carry newborn twins in a baby carrier – Green Jelly can advise on which are suitable for carrying two.
You may have seen press releases regarding a recall of 'bag carriers' Slingrider and Wendy Bellissimo manufactured by Infantino. Please be assured that Green Jelly does not sell or recommend these types of carrier.
